Cordyceps Benefits for Older Adults: Evidence, Limits, and Safety

What does the research say about cordyceps benefits for older adults?

Cordyceps has centuries of use in traditional Chinese medicine, and modern lab studies point to real biological activity. But direct human evidence in older adults is thin — one small pilot trial on exercise capacity, and little else. This guide walks through what that evidence actually shows, what it can't tell you, and what to ask your doctor before trying a cordyceps supplement.

What cordyceps is

Cordyceps is a fungus with a long history in traditional Chinese medicine, where it was valued as a tonic. In nature, one well-known species (Cordyceps sinensis) grows on insect larvae in high-altitude regions of Asia — a detail that sounds unusual but explains why wild-harvested cordyceps has raised sustainability concerns. Most cordyceps in today's supplements, including RENEW's, comes from mycelium grown in a lab, not wild-harvested fungus. Mycelium is the fungus's root-like network, and cultivating it in a controlled setting is now the common commercial approach, which sidesteps the wild-harvest sustainability issue entirely.

Cordyceps contains compounds researchers have studied for their biological activity, including cordycepin and polysaccharides (long chains of sugar units). A 2020 peer-reviewed review describes laboratory and animal research suggesting these compounds may support immune cell activity. The same review is direct about the gap between that lab work and proof in people: it states that established scientific evidence on cordyceps's health effects in humans "are lacking," and calls for more human validation before drawing firm conclusions.

The one relevant human trial in older adults

The most directly relevant human study is a small pilot trial published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Researchers gave 20 healthy adults ages 50–75 either a standardized cordyceps product (Cs-4, 999 mg per day) or a placebo for 12 weeks. Fifteen participants finished the study — eight on cordyceps, seven on placebo. In the cordyceps group, two measures of exercise capacity — metabolic threshold and ventilatory threshold — rose modestly; in the placebo group both measures fell over the same 12 weeks. Overall aerobic capacity (VO2 max) did not change in either group. That second detail matters when reading the result: part of the gap between the groups came from the placebo group declining, not only from the cordyceps group improving.

The authors call their own work a pilot study and say a larger trial is needed before the finding counts as convincing evidence. The material studied was supplied by the supplement manufacturer, which is a detail worth knowing when weighing the result. Fifteen completers is a small number to build confidence in a general claim about "older adults."

How this relates to RENEW — and how it doesn't

RENEW's label names Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis) extract (mycelium) as one part of a four-mushroom, 1,020 mg proprietary blend, included to support normal immune function. That is a different product, at a different amount, than the standardized Cs-4 fermentation extract used in the pilot trial above — the study product was a single-ingredient capsule at a stated 999 mg daily dose; RENEW's cordyceps is combined with maitake, reishi, and shiitake at a total blend weight, with no separate cordyceps amount disclosed on the panel. That means the pilot trial's exercise-capacity result cannot be applied to RENEW directly, and RENEW does not claim it does.

Safety and what to watch for

The NIH's LiverTox resource reports that cordyceps extracts are "generally well tolerated" and have not been linked to liver-enzyme elevations in available reports; the FDA treats cordyceps as generally recognized as safe. Reported side effects are usually mild: stomach discomfort, dry mouth, or nausea. One published case report describes a liver-related complication in an older woman on long-term cordyceps use; LiverTox itself rates cordyceps an unlikely cause of that case. It is a single account judged improbable by the source that catalogues it — worth knowing about, not worth alarm.

Because cordyceps may affect the immune system and blood sugar, it is not necessarily neutral to combine with other health conditions or medicines. Memorial Sloan Kettering's herb-interaction database notes that cordyceps may add to the effect of blood-thinning medication — including a documented case of excessive bleeding after a dental procedure — and may have an additive blood-sugar-lowering effect alongside insulin or other diabetes medicines, though how significant that effect is in practice isn't yet established. Its immune-stimulating activity is also a relevant question for anyone taking immune-suppressing medication.

Bring your full supplement label to your next appointment and ask:

  • I take a blood thinner. Could a cordyceps-containing supplement affect my bleeding risk?
  • I take insulin or another diabetes medicine. Could this affect my blood sugar?
